My favourite team as a child was the New York Mets and Howard Johnson was my favourite player. He had power and speed. HoJo was the second player in MLB history to record three 30 HR - 30 SB seasons. Johnson and Darryl Strawberry are the only teammates in MLB history to record 30/30 seasons in the same season, 1987. Johnson had a monster season in 1991, leading the NL with 38 HRs, 117 RBIs, finishing second with 107 runs and nabbing 30 bases for his third 30/30 season. Unfortunately, the Mets glory day were past and Johnson finished 5th in NL MVP voting while the Mets finished 20.5 games out of a play-off spot.
Here's a quintet of Howard Johnson in OPC hockey card style.
Great cards, wish I could own them! I was very lucky that 1987 season...I was in Shea the night both HoJo and Darryl hit their 30th, then went back to college and was at Wrigley to see Darryl steal his 30th, to complete the dual 30/30. (HoJo's 30th steal had come earlier in September, at Shea against St. Louis, but I wasn't there for that one.) So that particular accomplishment always means a lot to me! There can't be many fans who were at both of those games.
ReplyDeleteWow! (To the above comment). Great customs, too. I really like the 1988-89 hockey design for baseball.
ReplyDeleteI’m a huge Hojo fan too! At first I’m like wait, I don’t have those cards lol. Awesome customs. You ever make physical versions of them? I’d be interested in purchasing a copy of them if you did. You almost had me going on a scavenger hint for them.
